International English Language Testing System - Test Format and Rules:

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is accepted by the academic institution of Australia, British, Canada, New Zealand, Irish and South Africa and many more in all over the United States.

Managed by Whom:

IELTS is an international standardized test of English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL examinations, the British Council & IDP Education.

  • This test is ordered to minimize linguistic bias. 
  • It tests the ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.
  • Band scores are used for each language sub-skill. The band score range 0 to 9. 
  • The speaking module is the most important portion of this exam. It is conducted in the form of an interview with examiners. 
  • This exam is developed with various writers from all over the world.

Versions of IELTS Exam:

There are two versions of the IELTS: 1) Academic Version & 2) General Training Version

Academic Version: This version is for professionals who want to study or practice in an English speaking country & those who want to enroll in universities.

General Training Version: It is for those who plan for non-academic training or want to get work experience or for immigration purpose.

IELTS Test Structure:

There are four modules in the exams such as –
  • Listening 
  • Reading 
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Total duration is around 2 hours & 45 minutes.
  • Listening: 40 minutes
  • Reading: 60 minutes
  • Writing: 60 minutes
  • Speaking: 11 to 15 minutes

IELTS Exam Band Scale:

ILTES is scored on the basis of band scale as score range is 0 to 9. There is no need for minimum marks to pass the exam. The Test Report Form is issued to all candidates with a score from band-0 to band-9 are as follows:
9 – Expert user
8 - Very good user
7 – Good user
6 – Competent user
5 – Modest user
4 – Limited user
3 – Extremely limited user
2 – Intermittent user
1 – Non-user
0 – Did not attempt the test

IELTS Exam Location & Dates of Test:

The test is taken every year in 500 locations across 121 countries. There are up to 48 exam dates available per year. Each exam center offers test up to 4 times in a month depending on local demand.
